How to Assess Your Client’s Mental State through Body Language

Whether you’re a Pilates Instructor, Yoga Teacher, Mindset Coach or Psychologist - you need to read your client’s body language to get to the root cause of their pain.

Here are some quick tips you can use when working with your clients to get psychological insights of where they’re at without needing to talking about it… You can simply notice these things and implement what’s needed to help them shift and stop the problem from recurring by getting to the root cause of the problem.

Client holds back what’s really going on when:

  • Shoulders are rounded

  • Chin tucked

  • Lean on right foot or sit bone more than left

  • Feet, legs or arms cross

Client is not present when:

  • Eyes move a lot

  • Breath is not rhythmic

  • Topics of conversation change a lot

  • Scattered movements

Client is holding onto control when:

  • Right toes scrunch

  • Right hand over left

  • Knee pain

  • Jaw tension

  • Digestive problems

Applying the processes of the Body Story Method can all be done without having to even speak about it and your clients will leave feeling amazing and have the transformations they've been wanting.

When we miss the cues from the body, we miss whether change is occurring and we miss the root cause of the problem. This increases the amount of time it takes to create change and also increases the guess work.

In movement sessions when we miss these things, clients can experience recurring pain or injuries which are the body's way of telling you that part of the body is needing support.

In Coaching sessions when we notice the movement patterns - we can know if change is occurring and whether it'll be deep and long lasting or short term with the same problem resurfacing.

Next time you notice these things in your client’s body language - use methods in your tool kit to see when the shift occurs.
